BSE Effects Volume 1 Reason Refill

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

You can download a small Reason Refill of effects patches that I have created from http://www.barkingspider.co.uk/downloads/BSE-Effects-Volume1.zip.

RV7000 Patches - 8 patches - 4 echos, 3 fx, 1 reverb
Scream 4 Patches- 8 noisy patches
Combinator Patches - 4 effects patches (intended to be used as send effects) described below.

Echotape - A combination of reverb and delays with a bit of distortion for extra measure. An LFO sweeping the delay time produces an additional sound similar to an audio tape being slowed down and speeded up.

Delayed Again - A delay followed by another short delay - produces a very rich sound.

4 Delays - 4 delays running in parallel with optional phaser and lfo controlled filter.

Sordid Echo - After being run through a Scream4 to dirty things up a bit the sound progresses through a gated echo before being processed by the vocoder. Play with the patterns and timing in the Matrix Pattern Sequencer and try changing the modulator sound.

Your comments and suggestions are more than welcome.

Local Product: Accrual and Miso Mixtape

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

Picked up a couple of cds from local folk in the past week or so - Accrual ‘Kirkville Blue’ and Miso Mixtape volume one - both were £5 or less and they’re both great - even more reason to support local artists!

Accrual - Kirkville Blue

Accrual are billed as an ‘improvised drone project’ which doesn’t exactly fill me with glee or indeed do them much justice. The two members of the band are Ruaridh Law (Marcia Blaine School for Girls, The Village Orchestra) on the electronics and Alasdair Satchel on guitar. Their sound is ambient and layered as you’d expect but with a lot more variation and melody than I’m used to in this type of music. There are times when some of the fx processing is reminiscent of Law’s Village Orchestra work but overall the cd holds it’s own and I would definitely recommend picking one up. Only £4.75 from unlabel! Accrual also have a cdr coming out on Diesel Combustible soon.

Miso Mix-Tape One

The first in a series of unmixed cds from Glasgow electronic night Miso. Featuring an all-star line up including Marcia Blaine, Christ., Vessel and Magnetophone. The cd is pretty varied starting with bit crushed beats and flowing pads from Vessel. The second track from Efterking is a more glitchy affair that morphs into almost folktronica territory. This is followed by tracks from the Marcias and Christ. which are fairly predictable if you know the artists but top drawer nevertheless. The remainder from Toman, Magnetophone and Blindfold arent really my cup of tea but well executed. You can find more info at the Miso site.

Other local stuff… Greenbank (Benbecula) has a very nice looking new website up and running with some nice tracks for download - Greenbank site.

Recommended new Scottish Releases

Wednesday, February 1st, 2006

Some cracking local releases coming out at the moment:

  • Tangible - Gameover (Point One) - second release from the Glasgow based label bringing you some Drexciyan type techno lushness
  • Sleepless Crew - Spell House (Dalriada Limited) - squelchy acid pumping party goodness
  • Various - Music Volume 3 (Benbecula) - the long awaited follow up to the Music series - Frogpocket, Christ., Greenbank and more - still to hear this myself but I’m sure it’ll be class.

New Christ. album coming up on Benbecula later this year and the fourth installment from Stuff Records is due fairly soon as well. The electronic music scene in Scotland is stronger than ever on the releases front even if the clubs are dying off a bit.

Dopamine - Harsh

Thursday, November 24th, 2005

My mate Matt Dopamine has released his 2nd 12″ this week. “Harsh” on Klaus Hill’s Title Fight imprint is the follow up to his massive “Hold You” on TCR. The 12″ features the original plus a rework by Matt and Klaus Hill himself. Definitely worth checking out - you can buy it on vinyl from Juno or buy the mp3s from DJDownload.com.

New stuff @ Avionix

After being rather quiet for a while there’s been a glut of releases on the Avionix site. Get over there for a new netlabel mix from Patrick Walker, a 3Carbine mp3 EP and the 3Carbine remix of Jakeone’s “Shake”.

Squarepusher, Luke Vibert & Cassette Boy in Glasgow

Tuesday, October 25th, 2005

I don’t tend to get too excited about clubs/gigs these days but this one has got me going. I’ve never made it to see Squarepusher before and last time I heard Luke Vibert playing out was 9 years ago so I’m definitely going to make it to this one. I heard the new Cassetteboy album at the weekend and whilst I wasn’t entirely concentrating on it, it sounded good. A top top line up!
